To show the world the difference that a family can make in the life of institutionalized children from Russia, many of my online friends who have adopted made a before and after collage of their children and shared them on social media. Here's the one I made of Anya. (We have only had Hazel for a week, so the visible difference isn't dramatic enough for a comparison such as this. Her spirit sure has changed, though!)
Do you see the joy on her face? Her world has completely changed for the better. She has parents, brothers and sisters who love her to pieces, teachers at school who believe in her and challenge her mind, and people at church who truly care about her. She has loving grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. She's smart, talented, sweet and beautiful. She's a child of God and she now knows it.
Americans are some of the only people who will bring children with special needs into their families. Here, they are valued and have a chance to reach their fullest potential.
An ammendment to the new law has been submitted to allow Americans to adopt the children who have special needs. Please pray with us that this ammendment will pass, and that all of Anya and Hazel's friends will have families of their own. And that the label "special needs" will be broad enough that none of the children will fall through the cracks. I know God loves each one of them and that all of this nonsense has a silver lining. Hearts are changing, slowly but surely.
