I always love the Saturday night adult session of Stake Conference the most. (Stake Conference is where a bunch of wards, or a 'stake' meets together twice a year.)The talk during which I took the most notes was given by President Cooper, one of the counselors in the presidency. He talked about how to help insure that your children will stay morally clean. Here are a few thoughts that stood out to me:
1) It's our responsibility to teach our kids about staying morally clean, not their church leaders.
2) The best way to insure that our kids stay morally clean is to get to know them so intimately that we can sense when something isn't right almost instantly. Parents should know if a child is struggling with something long before the bishop does.
3) Our kids should completely trust us. They should feel like they can confide in us about anything. We should spend time talking one-on-one with each of them on a regular basis, constantly praising them for every good thing we can possibly think of. They should feel real love from us at all times, even when we are disappointed in them. They should never fear us. Respect is never earned when we lash out in anger. We have to control our emotions (bridle our passions so to speak) if we expect them to do the same.
4) The result: when a son or daughter feels true approval from their parents, they will never feel the need to seek approval elsewhere.
Good stuff to keep in mind as the kids head into the big, scary TEEN YEARS! Ready or not, here we come.
