Bennett's Pinewood Derby

Bennett was so excited for the Pinewood Derby! This is his first year in Cub Scouts.

He knew just the shape that he wanted for his car 

and he traced it out on the block of wood as soon as he got it. 

At the church where the derby was held,

a "greasing station" with graphite waited for the cars. 

All of the dads had greased up their sons' cars 

for optimal speed just before the first heat.

Except Bennett's.

He didn't think it was needed because they had done it when they put the wheels on.

Poor little race car. 

It chugged along slowly, trailing behind all of the others.

Even the cars that weren't shaped very efficiently for speed

raced faster down the track than Bennett's.

Once the times were all recorded and we figured out what we had missed, 

Dad and Bennett went over and greased up the axles with graphite.

Off the record, Bennett went back and raced the fastest car 

and guess what?

His car totally beat it!

I think that was enough for Bennett.

It didn't matter that everyone thought his car was the slowest. 

He knew it was awesome.

What a sport.

Anya and her friend, Lillie enjoyed watching the cars race down the track.

Lillie was in Anya's class this past year and has been such a sweet friend to her.

We are lucky that she lives just around the corner.

We hear that they do the Pinewood Derby every year in this Cub Scout Pack.

We must remember next year to put graphite on the wheels just before race time!
